The two-day course is built as a student-centred project rather than a series of lectures. Participants work in teams on a specific scientific question that they must solve under the guidance of supervisors. Discussion and interaction are at the core of the course. Instead of sitting passively through traditional presentations, participants are encouraged to work independently in a controlled environment, making their own decisions, interpreting their own data and defending their conclusions, while the supervisors guide, challenge and support them.

To answer the question, each team has a broad portfolio of methods at its disposal, including atomic force microscopy, traction force microscopy, Brillouin microscopy, indentation, and uniaxial and biaxial tensile testing. These can be combined with advanced imaging techniques such as confocal microscopy, optical projection tomography and label-free approaches like pSHG, THG, FLIM and CARS. The supervisor steers each team towards the methods best suited to its question. The data analysis workflow will give practical examples of curve fitting, cell segmentation or TFM analysis, using Python and AI tools. The course concludes with each team presenting and defending its results.
